SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION OF PAINTINGS

Microscopic analysis of paint samples (above) is used to understand the structure and materials of which a painting is made.
In the studio, ultraviolet light is routinely used to detect alterations, and Infra-red photography to detect underdrawing can be commissioned.
Using these means, as well as others, cleaning is fully informed, and dating and authorship can be clarified.
