Conservation & Repair of Canvases & Panels

CONSERVATON AND REPAIR OF CANVASES AND PANELS

Tears, splits, cracks, scrapes, sagging canvas and dents are regular occurrences.
Paintings in domestic settings that slip out of their frames, or fall off the wall and onto the fire irons, exhibit typical damages. Paintings can sag, and paint can crack when tacks rust through the canvas turning edges.
Tears in weak canvases can be repaired by re-weaving under magnification and edge reinforcement, or in some cases by lining, using reliable, tested conservation methods and materials.
Cracks and splits in panels are often caused by poor framing or housing, and solutions for their stabilisation need to be devised for each individual case.
The over-riding aim is to interfere as little as possible with the original materials, and to relieve the inherent and environmental stresses that cause deterioration.
